Driving in Koh Samui: a first-timer’s guide

Fri, 18 Sept 2026 · 5 min read

Koh Samui is one of the easiest Thai islands to explore by car. The main ring road circles the island, the signage is mostly in English as well as Thai, and most beaches, temples and waterfalls are a short drive from it.

If you are used to driving on the right, the biggest adjustment is that Thailand drives on the left. Take the first few minutes slowly, leave the car park carefully, and let the traffic set your pace.

Share the road with motorbikes

Motorbikes and scooters outnumber cars on Samui. Expect them to pass on both sides, to filter between lanes at junctions and to appear in your mirrors very suddenly. Check your mirrors and blind spot before every turn or lane change, and give riders extra room, especially in rain.

Parking and fuel

Most beach restaurants and attractions have free parking, and Chaweng and Lamai have paid car parks near the busiest streets. Petrol stations are plentiful along the ring road and most are staffed. Tell the attendant the fuel grade and amount, and pay at the pump or the kiosk.

Our cars are handed over with a recorded fuel level. Returning with the same level avoids any refuelling charge.

Good habits

Always wear your seat belt, keep your licence and rental paperwork in the car, avoid driving after drinking, and watch your speed on hills and bends. Roads can be slippery after tropical showers. If something does go wrong, call the number on your rental sheet and we will help straight away.
