Driving on Koh Samui
Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island and comfortably explored by car. The main ring road (Route 4169) circles the island in about an hour, connecting all the major beaches and towns. Driving is on the left, traffic is light outside Chaweng, and most roads are well-maintained.
Airport area (north-east): Samui International Airport (USM) is in the north-east of the island near Bophut. From arrivals it is a short drive south to Chaweng or north to Mae Nam and Bangrak.
Popular beaches by car: Chaweng (15 min from airport), Lamai (25 min), Nathon (30 min), Taling Ngam (35 min), Lipa Noi (30 min). Ang Thong National Park boat tours depart from Nathon Pier.
You need a valid driving licence from your home country. An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended and required if your licence is not in English or Roman script. Minimum driver age is 21.
