Do I need an International Driving Permit in Thailand?
Fri, 21 Aug 2026 · 3 min read
Thai rules generally expect visitors who drive to carry a valid licence from their home country together with an International Driving Permit (IDP), or a Thai driving licence. Requirements can change, so please check the latest guidance from your own licensing authority and the Thai authorities before you travel.
Why it matters
Insurance can be affected if a driver does not hold the correct licence for the vehicle they are driving, and police checkpoints do ask to see licences. We record your licence details at booking and check them again at pick-up.
What to bring
Bring your original driving licence, your IDP if you have one, and your passport. Both the main driver and any additional driver need to present their licences at pick-up. The minimum driver age on our rentals is 21.
