The Koh Samui round-island drive: a one-day itinerary
Wed, 2 Sept 2026 · 6 min read
The ring road makes Samui perfect for a self-drive day. This route starts in Chaweng and runs clockwise, so the sun is behind you for much of the morning. Start early, bring water and swimwear, and treat the stops below as a menu rather than a schedule.
Morning: the north-east
Begin with breakfast near Chaweng, then head north to the Big Buddha at Bophut. Arrive early for the best light and fewer coaches. Fisherman’s Village is a short drive away and is a pleasant place for coffee before the heat builds.
Midday: the north and west
Continue along the north coast through Maenam, where the beach is quieter and the road runs close to the sea. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant. The north-west coast around Lipa Noi is known for calm water and quiet beaches.
Afternoon and sunset: the south
Cut back across the island or follow the coast south. The Na Muang waterfalls are a popular cooling-off stop, and the rock formations at Lamai are worth a short detour. Finish with a late swim and dinner on the beach.
Plan on roughly four to six hours of driving and stopping, depending on how many places grab you. With a hybrid or electric car the day costs very little in fuel or charging.
